The popularity of film festivals and pop-up cinemas has increased dramatically in recent years, with exciting opportunities to see a diverse range of new, classic, international and short films cropping up all over the UK. We've rounded up a selection due to take place this year, each with its own eclectic programme.

Encounters Festival
Held between 20 - 25 September in Bristol, Encounters Festival celebrates the creativity of short film alongside an intensive industry programme of masterclasses, panel discussions, and talks and workshops with leading figures from the film and animation industries. Each year it discovers, supports and develops new talent in filmmaking, providing a platform for emerging and established filmmakers from around the world, and acting as a unique meeting place for the industry.
Encounters hosts an international competition for short film and animation, and offers a gateway to the world's most prestigious awards, including the BAFTAs, the European Film Awards, the Cartoon d'Or - and even a qualifying festival for The Academy Awards®! Also, in partnership with Into Film the festival will be hosting three screening events for pupils, created by local children and young people who have viewed, reviewed and programmed the selection of short films. The Nomad Cinema
Described as a 'roaming pop-up that gives back', The Nomad Cinema is back with another summer season of pop-up screenings in quirky London venues, including Hyde Park Lido, The Royal Academy, The Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey, Queen's Park, the National Maritime Museum and - perfect for those Hitchcock chillers - Brompton Cemetery.
Classic films like Casablanca, Vertigo, Psycho, Some Like It Hot and Jaws sit alongside contemporary titles such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road, with many more in between, and will be screened in a Festival style atmosphere. The season runs until the end of September, and all profits go to The Sustainability Institute, a pioneering environmental and educational charity in South Africa.
The Foyle Film Festival
The Foyle Film Festival is a flagship project of the Nerve Centre in Derry/Londonderry, and is an annual celebration of independent films, acclaimed feature length movies, documentaries and short films. This year the Festival runs from 16 - 20 November.
Over the last 28 years the event has become renowned for attracting high profile names, including Brendan Gleeson, Andrea Arnold, Ray Winstone, Cillian Murphy and our own Northern Ireland ambassador, Sir Kenneth Branagh.
In addition, the Festival offers a stand-alone education program, targeting schools and colleges with a series of curriculum based feature films, documentaries, workshops, presentations, and outreach screenings. Find out more about the Foyle Film Festival programme here.
Bedford Film Festival
Bedford Film Festival is an organisation set up to screen films that aren't available in other local public venues, and to inspire local filmmakers by providing access to leading industry experts, whilst simultaneously promoting Bedford as a destination for filmmakers and film lovers everywhere.
Throughout September, their mission is to #SupportVariety with film choices that never follow a set genre, allowing audiences to sample cinema that they may never have considered or perhaps haven't had the chance to experience before. See the full Bedford Film Festival programme here.
The Floating Cinema
The Floating Cinema is an award-winning architectural structure that offers a programme of film and expanded cinema events tailored to the canals and rivers it visits. This summer the mobile arts space brings its action packed series (titled Another Country) to riverside locations in Hackney Wick, King's Cross and Mile End in London, featuring on-board screenings, talks and workshops. Highlights include screenings of documentaries Half Way and Public House, as well as rarely seen short films from the London Filmmakers Co-op.
The Floating Cinema programme kicks off with World Cities between 19 - 21 August, and then continues 1 - 4 September and 23 - 25 September.
The Cornwall Film Festival
The Cornwall Film Festival was established in 2002 by a group of enthusiastic Cornish filmmakers as a platform to screen short films made in the South-West, and to develop an audience for film. Held in Redruth during November, the festival will be a showcase of filmmaking talent, bringing worthy filmmakers to regional and national attention.
The first festival screened 63 shorts and two feature-length films. Since then, it has steadily grown to include a range of skills workshops, educational events and professional development opportunities, and in 2008 became a registered charity. The Cornwall Film Festival charity is managed by a board of trustees who oversee the governance of the organisation, with a steering group providing support.
