Featuring much-loved characters inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's ‘The Snow Queen', Frozen II is a fantastical musical sequel celebrating fairy tales, storytelling and the power of friendship.
A number of fantastic cinema releases this week, ranging from a slice of energetic, British social-realism to a feminist re-telling of a children's classic. First off, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary tells the true story of a documentary filmmaker who gets more than he bargained for when he agrees to make a film about a famous comic-magician on his comeback tour. Meanwhile, Blue Story is the feature film debut of musician and director Rapman, vividly telling the story of two young friends in London who get caught up in the escalating gang violence that is rippling throughout their neighbourhood.
Harriet is the important and timely biopic of Harriet Tubman, one of the earliest Civil Rights activists and a woman who saved the lives of many people who were enslaved in America prior to the Civil War. Containing a powerhouse performance from Cynthia Erivo, it aims to start a valuable discussion about race and activism. Lastly, Judy and Punch tells the story of a violent husband-and-wife puppet show which becomes a catalyst for an uprising in a mid-17th century countryside town, turning gender stereotypes and cliches on their head, no doubt an intriguing prospect for young people.
This CGI remake of the animated original, The Lion King, boasts fantastic visuals, features a diverse voice cast and contains brand new songs from Beyoncé and Elton John.
In the Pride Lands of Africa, a group of lions rule over the animal kingdom, led by King Mufasa who teaches his young son Simba all about the circle of life. However, Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, plots to overthrow the King coveting the throne for himself and works with his friends of the jungle to set a trap for Simba and his father. As Simba grows up, he must learn about bravery and responsibility if he is to become the King of the Jungle and fulfill his destiny.
For an entertaining and educational retelling of the invention of electricity, The Current War brings to life the key players involved in that important period of history. This star-studded cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, who play competing American inventors Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse.
Those looking for an alternative way to celebrate the festive season with cinema should take a look at Anna and the Apocalypse. Set in Scotland during Christmas, this unique zombie-musical follows a group of high-school friends trying to survive a sudden attack of the undead.
