Synopsis

Harriet Tubman is known as one of the early key figures of the civil rights movement in the United States. Freeing herself from slavery, she embarked on several missions to rescue enslaved people using a antislavery network called the Underground Railroad. This biopic spans the abolitionist’s brutal yet inspirational life’s work and her transformation into a political activist. The film also looks at the shifting of laws that oppressed black people prior to the Civil War, while also interestingly exploring at some of the gender and class dynamics between enslaved and freed slaves. Harriet is an important account of an historical figure that is often overlooked and aims to start a valuable discussion about racism and its deep history in American society and politics.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
