A wide range of new, engaging and thrilling films are hitting screens this June, offering young audiences many options for a trip to the cinema. The colourful, comical and conflicting emotions of a young person are hilariously brought to life in Inside Out 2, the much-anticipated sequel to Disney and Pixar's hit animation. Adventure and self-discovery are also on the cards in the whimsical live-action film Riddle of Fire, and in-depth documentary Food, Inc. 2 lays out the challenges and innovations in today's food industry. For more mature young audiences, two brand new horror films showcase the thrilling possibilities provoking the senses, especially hearing in A Quiet Place: Day One and sight in The Watched.

Food, Inc. 2 (12) - in cinemas 7 June 2024

In 2008, a ground-breaking documentary got everyone talking about the food industry. Food, Inc. was one of the first films to highlight the issues surrounding modern agriculture, threats to health, and the dangers of pushing for profit over quality. This timely and urgent sequel examines the progress on these issues and uncovers new challenges in nutrition, such as ultra-processed food and climate change. Pulling together the concerns and innovative solutions of policy makers, producers and consumers, the documentary offers young people much food for thought on the future of our food system.

Riddle of Fire (12A) - in cinemas 7 June 2024

Set in rural Wyoming, this quirky action-adventure comedy sees three cheeky children on a quest to make a blueberry pie for their sick mother - in exchange for video games access. Armed with dirt bikes and paintballs, they roam their local area to gather the pie's ingredients getting in all kinds of trouble, including facing off with a gang of witch-like woodland dwellers over some special speckled eggs. Like a modern Grimm fairy tale shot on 16mm film, this enchanting film evokes timeless child-like wonder.

Director Ishana Night Shyamalan gives her accomplished plot-twisting father M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth SenseSplit) a run for his money in this chilling horror-thriller. When Mina's car breaks down in a strange forest, she wanders through the trees looking for help. As night falls, she is ushered into a bunker by a stranger, where she is trapped with other lost travellers as unseen supernatural beings watch them every night from the other side of the glass walls, and terrible things happen if they don't return to the bunker before dark. Based on an Irish novel, this film offers mature young audiences a heart-thumping dive into the horror genre.

A Quiet Place: Day One (certificate TBC) - in cinemas 28 June 2024

This tense prequel to A Quiet Place (available to watch for free* on Into Film+ Premium) uncovers the dramatic backstory of how it all began. Long before the Abbott family committed to silent communication as a survival method, life was normal in noisy, overcrowded New York City. This story shifts its focus to a new central character, Sam, a woman who finds herself, along with her cat, amid the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple right as an alien invasion takes place. It's a while before the panicked, screaming inhabitants realise that what drives these creatures into a frenzy is sound, but Sam and other disparate individuals must adapt quickly in the immediate aftermath of this terrifying turn of events.
