There have been some heavy hitting blockbusters and some unexpected indies released into cinemas this summer and that trend looks to be continuing as August rolls around. With a hotly anticipated new sci-fi film from Jordan Peele shrouded in mystery before its arrival on the big screen and one of the year's strangest but effective animations making its debut as well, there has never been a better time to take a chance on a visit to your local cinema.
Nope - in cinemas 12 August
After his game-changing debut Get Out, Jordan Peele has continued to evolve as a genre filmmaker, and his latest is another step up in spectacle. After a series of unexplained occurrences, such as their electric power dropping out suddenly and a single unmovable cloud appearing in the sky, brother and sister duo OJ and Emerald recruit a local alien enthusiast and video technician to help them document what they believe is a UFO. With the ranch next door, run by an infamous child TV star, also aiming to financially benefit from this new discovery, the Haywoods soon find themselves dealing with far more than they bargained for. Rich with ideas and unsettling in its execution, Nope addresses our relationship with the untamable and the human desire to document our existence.
Where is Anne Frank - in cinemas 12 August
The story of Anne Frank has been adapted multiple times but this new animation, co-produced in Europe, puts a fresh and effective spin on one of 20th-century history's most iconic figures. This lustrous animation brings Anne's imaginary friend Kitty to life in modern day Amsterdam, portraying her as a fiery teenager, determined to discover what happened to her friend. As Kitty wanders the city and is implicated in the stealing of the famous diary from the Anne Frank Museum, she makes friends with a group of refugee teenagers, begins to fall in love, and discovers more about the enduring legacy that Anne left behind. Where is Anne Frank is a vibrant but sincere story that switches between the past and the present to contrast Kitty and Anne's stories against the current plight facing refugees and immigrants in European cities.
Eiffel - in cinemas 12 July
Everybody is aware of the Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most iconic structures, but what do we know of the man who designed it? In 1889, the civil engineer Gustave Eiffel completed the construction of a magnificently tall tower at the heart of Paris, and legend has it that the Eiffel Tower was born of a passionate love. This romantic historical fiction draws inspiration from the French visionary's personal life and his long-lost love, Adrienne Bourgès. As he considers whether to embark on an ambitious project for the World Fair, Gustave re-encounters Adrienne, the woman he once hoped to marry but who is now his colleague's wife. Feelings and memories which have long been buried resurface, spurring Gustave on the adventure of building an everlasting tribute to the one who got away. With insights into the history of civil engineering, this French-language film is rich in period set pieces and lessons in love.
