Heroic warrior tale The Woman King leads October's new releases

October's eclectic new cinema releases sees stories being told from all across the globe, with 4 different continents represented. From fantastical to historical, from epic to personal, Proud African tribes, the lost King of England, a talkative crocodile and a two animal-loving brothers from India make up just the surface of what is on offer for audiences in the U.K. throughout this month.

The Woman King - in cinemas 7 October

This historical epic tells the story of Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, the character at the center of The Woman King is General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Her emotionally epic journey may have been set in the past but resonates with some of the social issues faced by women all over the world today. 

The Lost King - in cinemas 7 October

Based on an incredible true story that created headlines in 2012, when the remains of Richard III were discovered underneath a car park in Leicester, The Lost King is also a tale of perseverance with a fantastic focus on how history is an ever-evolving narrative. Overworked and overlooked at her job due to her chronic fatigue syndrome, Philippa Langley is struggling to find meaning in her life. After taking her son to a production of Shakespeare's Richard III, she finds herself becoming slowly enamoured with the former King of England, forming a strange kinship with him across time and space. As she delves further into his life, and discovers the prejudices that were levelled against him, Philippa comes to believe she may have found the final resting place of The Lost King, a holy grail for historians the world over. However, when she attempts to present these findings to professionals, she is met with disparagement and arrogance, forcing her to forge her own path towards uncovering Richard's remains and finally bringing his truth to the public.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile - in cinemas 14 October

Based on the best-selling book series, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a heartwarming story about family, friendship, and community featuring original songs. Some sung by a crocodile! When the Primm family moves to New York City, their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and new friends. Everything changes when he discovers a large crocodile named Lyle living in his attic who loves, amongst other things, to sing and take baths! They quickly become close friends and so when Lyle's residence is threatened by their horrible neighbour Mr. Grumps, the Primms must team up with the crocodile's eccentric owner, Hector P. Valenti, to show the world that Lyle is very much a part of their family. 

Emily  - in cinemas 14 October

In her thirty years, Emily Brontë wrote one, hauntingly enduring novel, ‘Wuthering Heights'. Little detail is known about the author's life, other than what can be gathered from the accounts of her older sister Charlotte, who famously wrote ‘Jane Eyre'. Emily conjures a portrait of sibling rivalry, brooding Yorkshire moors and inner turmoil as the younger Brontë sister strives to develop her creative expression. Cast as the ‘strange one' within her strait-laced Victorian family, Emily finds freedom alongside her maverick brother Branwell and the poetic clergyman William Weightman, whose initial aggravating presence in Emily's life tuns into a possible inspiration for the heated relationship between her fictional characters Cathy and Heathcliff. A traditional period drama, this speculative biopic nevertheless explores the topics of mental health and female empowerment with eloquence and contemporary relevance.

All That Breathes - in cinemas 14 October

Containing beautiful imagery and exploring pertinent themes around the climate and rising social tensions, this moving documentary explores the human devotion to the animal kingdom. Nadeem and Saud are brothers living in New Delhi who run an organisation called Wildlife Rescue which focuses on healing the ‘black kite' species of bird that have been dropping out of the polluted skies. In a densely populated city with toxic levels of air pollution and a wide range of wildlife, the brothers humorously bicker about everyday things as they go about their business amidst a backdrop of civil unrest. From their makeshift bird hospital in a tiny basement, the brothers are well-known within the community for their quirky but charitable activities.

This new superhero (or anti-hero?) film sees Dwayne Johnson playing Black Adam, an incredibly powerful being who, when reawakened, decides to dole out his own personal form of justice.

Mia and Me: The Hero of Centopia - in cinemas 21 October

Family-friendly CGI animation which sees Mia, the new owner of a magical stone, traversing a dangerous world in order to fulfill her long-awaited destiny.
