'Ready Player One' leads this week's new releases

Adapted from the best-selling young adult novel from Ernest Cline, Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where most people are forced to live in slum-like dwellings. Teenager Wade and his friends, like millions of others, seek refuge in a virtual reality world known as the OASIS. Following the death of its creator James Halliday, the eccentric genius sets his final enigma: a three-part contest, based on Halliday's love of popular culture, in which the winner gets total control of this virtual paradise. Steven Spielberg's latest blockbuster is a visual feast which celebrates and critiques the modern obsession with nostalgia.

Featuring an all-star voice cast, Wes Anderson's typically quirky stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs sees 12-year-old boy Atari travelling to an island filled with quarantined canines as he attempts to track down his own beloved pet; Paddy Considine writes, directs and stars in Journeyman, in which boxer Matty Burton suffers permanent brain damage after his final fight and, together with his wife, must struggle to keep their family together; romantic teenage drama Midnight Sun is about 17-year-old Katie who falls in love with a local boy but also has a rare condition meaning she can't be exposed to sunlight; Duck Duck Goose is a family animation in which an arrogant goose teams up with two little ducklings to journey south together after injuring his wing.

Wonder

Based on the popular novel of the same name, Wonder tells the story of Auggie Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters mainstream school for the first time in fifth grade. Over the course of a remarkable year, the passionate young scientist sets out to prove - with the help of his family - that he's no different to everyone else, as both he and his peers learn about compassion, empathy and understanding. This warm, sensitive film tells its story from multiple points of view, emphasising the importance of always striving to choose kindness.
