Saint Maud; The Secret Garden; Two by Two: Overboard
This week sees one of the year's most acclaimed films, Saint Maud, released for audiences to spook themselves at home. Continuing the trend of excellent female filmmakers nurturing their talents in the British independent films scene, Saint Maud is the feature directorial debut of Rose Glass, offering up a tension-filled tale of religious horror that oozes with style and atmosphere.
The story concerns a young care worker who arrives in a seaside town, desperate to find her purpose in life. A recent convert to Christianity, Maud prays to God for guidance and struggles to come to terms with the lifestyle of her new patient, Amanda, who is suffering from cancer but still maintains a lifestyle of drink, drugs and sex. Believing it is her duty to save Amanda, Maud begins to go to extreme lengths in order to fulfill her perceived destiny.
The Secret Garden, a story that has cemented itself as one of Britain's finest over the years, gets a fresh adaptation that delves into the complexities of the characters created by Frances Hodgson Burnett whilst still maintaining a fantastical and enjoyable approach to the material. Following a young orphan called Mary as she gets used to her new life on her rich Uncle's massive estate on the Yorkshire Moors, a mysterious and magical hidden garden becomes the focal point of her adventures and the healing she needs in her life.
Something for younger audiences now, Two by Two: Overboard uses the traditional tale of Noah's Ark in a new and exciting way to excite and enthrall. When two furry creatures, Leah and Finny accidently fall off the Ark, they end up stranded a magical island and a colony of animals that look just like them. The two then begin to work together to create a new home suitable for their friends in this funny and colorful sequel that offers themes around animal behaviour and friendship.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood; Missing Link
Into Film continue to produce film guides for our members to use in their film clubs or virtual classrooms. Suited perfectly for online use, each film guide comes in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and contains talking points and highlights to promote discussion between students.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood centres around the almost mythical figure of American children's TV entertainment, Mr. Rogers, based on the true story of a cynical journalist who was sent to profile him for a magazine and got more than he bargained for. Focusing on themes of kindness, family and maturity, this film guide is a fantastic introduction to the character of Mr. Rogers and the importance of having empathy for others.
Missing Link, the newest animation from trailblazing studio LAIKA , is a rip-roaring global adventure in which fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost teams up with a strange but talkative creature, vowing to accompany him to Shangri-La so he can be united with the mysterious yetis that he believes are his extended family. This film guide touches upon the mythical creatures that populate the film whilst also discussing friendship and belonging in the wider world.
