Leading this week's new releases is cyber thriller Searching, which is inventively set entirely on a computer screen. When 16 year-old Margot goes missing, her widowed father David Kim breaks into her laptop to find clues as to her whereabouts. As he searches through her social media channels and questions her classmates to try and find some answers, he soon finds out that he may not have known his daughter as well as he thought.
Idris Elba makes his directorial debut with an adaptation of British crime novel Yardie, telling the story of of a man who travels to London from Jamaica in the 1980s and soon becomes caught up in a drug war; elsewhere, documentary A Northern Soul shines a light on its director's hometown of Hull during its year as the UK city of culture in 2017, following resident Steve who brings music and performance to the city's disenfranchised youth.
Leading this week's DVD releases is the playful Yorkshire-set horror Ghost Stories, adapted from the popular stage play of the same name. It follows a cynical professor, Phillip Goodman, who refuses to believe in the possibility of the paranormal. However when he's challenged to investigate three supposedly unexplainable tales of the supernatural, his faith in evidence is tested in this wickedly delivered horror anthology.
Set in the working men's clubs of 1970s and 1980s Northern England, Funny Cow is a tough drama which follows its female protagonist - whose name we pointedly never learn - as she attempts to navigate her way through a chauvinistic comedy circuit. The film explores her formative experiences throughout her upbringing, including family life, incidents of bullying and abusive relationships, channelling these incidents into her performances, complete with a soundtrack from Richard Hawley.
Our top picks from each week's new cinema and DVD releases, all in one handy place....
