This week sees two documentaries taking a step back in time, albeit to tell two different stories. Whilst one film celebrates the unifying nature of human beings when faced with immediate danger, the other film focuses on a single person, commemorating their impact on culture, fashion and social change. Both, however, are captivating in their own right.
Safety is of course at the forefront of everyone's mind right now so make sure to check out the specific guidelines for your local cinema before visiting. The Rescue
From the filmmakers that made the award-winning Free Solo comes this equally as thrilling documentary about another kind of extreme sport - cave diving. During the months of June and July 2018, the world found themselves glued to the news after hearing that a youth football team in Thailand had gone missing during monsoon season . A week later they were discovered trapped in an underground cave, along with their coach, by specialist cave divers. Alive, but struggling with hunger and isolation, a plan began to form on how to rescue them. This film charts the incredible efforts made to save the youngsters from such treacherous circumstances, going into detail about the experience, skills and determination put into practice whilst also highlighting the shared humanity of the worldwide community that united for the rescue to take place.

Let this documentary take you back to the era of flower-power, the Fab Four and, most importantly, huge social change. The focus here is Mary Quant, the British designer that many believe popularised the mini skirt and who created liberating styles for young women that opposed the gendered rules of the times. This upbeat documentary on her life and legacy features incredible archive footage of 1960s pop culture alongside interviews with the likes of Kate Moss and Vivienne Westwood. An enjoyable account of the influential figure that also raising questions on topics such as fast fashion and changes in attitudes towards women in the workplace.
