This cross-curricular resource for Year Three pupils (ages 7-8) focuses on analysing portrait photographs for their framing, context and character before translating this understanding into the making of a two-shot film. It is designed to be delivered in one half day PSHE/Art and Design/Literacy/Computing lesson, with a photo-gathering task completed in advance.
Photo to Film is a UK-wide Into Film resource that complements the Tate Year 3 Project, a partnership project between the Tate, Artangel and A New Direction.
Working with Steve McQueen, from autumn 2018, the project invites every Year 3 class across London to take part in the largest group portrait ever made an epic picture of the city's pupils and rich civic diversity. It is a unique chance for London's seven to eight-year-olds to explore their hopes and futures in an entirely free to access programme with core curriculum outcomes, Citizenship and PSHE activities.
During autumn and spring term 2018-19, a Tate photographer will visit schools across the capital, taking class photographs for the artist to form a vast exhibition of tens of thousands of Year 3 pupils who will be centre stage for six months.

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.
