Shakespeare Week
15 March - 21 March
William Shakespeare was writing stories long before the medium of film was even conceived, and yet his works continue to influence cinema some 400 years later.
This assembly explores the enduring legacy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, looking at traditional adaptations like Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, as well as more leftfield contemporary versions of the play, such as Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet and animated variation Gnomeo and Juliet.
Please note: Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is currently subject to a legal action in the US by the two central actors regarding their treatment on set and a lack of informed consent for certain scenes in the film. Given the nature of these allegations, we will monitor developments and take any action required.
This resource consists of an assembly PowerPoint presentation, along with a PDF of teachers' notes to complement the slides.
We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.
