Synopsis

This tense and atmospheric adaptation of the much-celebrated gothic novel by Susan Hill sees widowed 1900s lawyer, Arthur Kipps, sent to a remote English village to handle the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric. However, Arthur's official duty quickly takes a back seat when a series of mysterious occurrences makes him realize that his client's mansion might be haunted by a terrifying woman dressed completely in black. With the safety of those close to him at risk, Arthur sets out to discover why the spirit seems so hellbent on revenge and destruction. Handsomely shot and full of great performances, this is a fantastic way to introduce modern audiences to the sensibilities of gothic literary horror.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
