Synopsis

This innovative, visually stunning and violent adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece tells the story of a duke of Scotland who, alongside his power-hungry wife, plots murder and betrayal after receiving a prophecy from three witches that he will ascend the throne. Enlivened by charismatic performances and a pulsating soundtrack, the film takes in many of the play’s themes of desire, destiny, corruption and betrayal making them both fresh and relevant. Whether on the foggy Highland battlefields or inside the claustrophobic halls of the palace the film is brooding, earthy, and atmospheric. Largely faithful to the text and language, this powerful new version of one of Shakespeare's boldest works is also intensely cinematic and distinctive.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
