Auteur director Pedro Almodóvar imbues this adaptation of a series of short stories by Alice Munro about a conflicted female protagonist with his characteristic melodrama and artistic vision. Julieta is a middle-aged woman about to move in with her partner, who abandons her plans when a chance encounter with a friend of her estranged daughter brings buried feelings of grief and guilt to the surface. Desperate to make amends, Julieta begins to write her version of the tragic events which lead to their separation, in the hope that she will be able to find and reconnect with her daughter.
