In 1887 – the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee – a young clerk named Abdul Karim arrived in the UK from a poor region of India (then part of the British Empire) to take part in the celebrations and present the queen with a ceremonial coin. He is surprised to find favour with the queen herself and the pair strike up an unusual friendship. Despite attempts by her household and inner circle to put an end to their relationship, the pair develop a close bond, as the queen begins to question the constrictions of her long-held position on the throne. As their friendship deepens, Queen Victoria begins to see a changing world through new eyes.
Drama about Queen Victoria, which focuses on her private life and suggests she was not the stern, unemotional figure often thought of.
