Synopsis

In 1945 Denmark, immediately after the end of World War Two, over a million German landmines remained on the West Coast, planted in anticipation of an Allied invasion of Europe. To carry out the grim task of defusing them, young German POWs were used, with the promise that – should they survive – they would be allowed to return home once the task was complete. Under the watch of a cruel sergeant who has little interest in their fate, the boys carry out their dangerous role in scenes of unbearable tension. Gradually, a fragile sense of compassion is awakened in the sergeant, as he realizes he is dealing with teenagers who had no complicity in Nazi practice. A stirring, powerful drama about revenge and compassion that offers an intelligent, fresh perspective on the war and a moving portrait of a collective humanity.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
