The Mayan civilization inhabited what is now Mexico in ancient history through to the early modern period. One of the largest cities and focal points for its powerful rulers was Chichén Itzá. Legend tells us that there is a hidden underground cave below El Castillo, a step-pyramid that still towers over the city ruins in the middle of the jungle. In this National Geographic documentary, a team of explorers using high-tech equipment and led by one of the world’s foremost experts on the Maya embark on an unprecedented expedition to find the buried truth. They uncover jade relics and ancient tombs, which are revealed to have important significance in Mayan rituals and customs. The mission is not without its dangers, with the changing weather and the cramped spaces of the cave turning this archaeological project into an exciting race against time, as the team begins to unravel an epic mystery.
