Synopsis

The death of his mother causes Pierre, a great orchestra conductor, to think back to his school days in the late 1940s. A troubled child, Pierre is sent to a boarding school in the French countryside called Fond de l'Étang (“Bottom of the pond”). A new teacher called Mr Mathieu arrives at the school and is taken aback by the harsh regime put in place by the headmaster to discipline the ‘unruly’ children, several of whom are orphans because of the recent war. The boys give Mr Mathieu a hard time at first, but he slowly gains their respect through his alternative, nurturing teaching style. He sets up a student choir, and young Pierre discovers he has a natural talent for singing. This touching French-language film explores the power of music and good teaching, highlighting the importance of giving people a chance.
