'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu' leads this week's new releases

One of the world's most popular video game franchises gets a long awaited live-action release with Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, a comedy-noir that launches us into the Pokémon universe.

In a world where people collect, train, befriend and battle creatures known as Pokèmon, a young man named Tim is searching for his father, an ace detective who went missing years earlier. One night he makes an unbelievable discovery, stumbling across a Pikachu and finding out they have the unique ability to communicate with one another, setting of a series of events that will unravel a great conspiracy in this adventure fuelled by friendship and a wise-cracking electric mouse.

The Hustle; Madeline's Madeline; Amazing Grace; Where Hands Touch

Also in cinemas this week is female-led comedy caper The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as two skilled but mismatched con artists who plan the biggest heist of their careers. Director Josephine Decker's Madeline's Madeline again puts women at the forefront of her story about a talented but troubled teen who uses experimental theatre as a way to combat her volatile emotions and the director who takes advantage of her.

Passionate music documentary Amazing Grace offers a never-before-seen snapshot into music history, capturing one of the late Aretha Franklin's most iconic performances in 1970's Los Angeles whilst British director Amma Asante's Where Hands Touch tells a story of love in the face of oppression as a young biracial girl falls in love with a member of the Hitler Youth during World War Two.

New to Order on DVD

Fahrenheit 11/9; Girl

This week's new DVD releases include Fahrenheit 11/9, a pseudo-sequel to fiery and controversial documentarian Michael Moore's 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11, this time focusing on the political and social environments that have led to the rise of the current Trump administration.

Lastly, Belgian drama Girl, follows a 15 year-old transgender teen as she attempts to fulfil her dream of becoming a ballerina. With Mental Health Awareness Week just around the corner (13th-19th May) and the theme of Body Image taking centre stage, Girl's unflinching look at gender identity and physical and mental well-being is a timely and powerful chance to tackle this important subject head-on.
