Into Film Clubs
Find out everything you need to know about starting an Into Film Club.
After a brief hiatus, we're happy to resume our Into Film Club of the Month series, which celebrates the best and most innovative clubs from across the UK. Our selection for March 2022 is the Marion Centre from the Bishop of Llandaff CiW High School in Cardiff, which is a specialist resource space for 11-19-year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Club leader Sadie Pontin chatted to us about how film has given her students an inclusive and creative space that opens their eyes to whole new worlds as well as her creation of a school 'cinema experience' and her use of our streaming platform, Into Film+.
What inspired you to start your Into Film Club?
Our students learn a lot from film and enjoy the experience of watching a film together. The visuals and sounds of a film help our students learn about storytelling, help enhance their imagination, develop their understanding of emotions and empathy, and can give a window into a new world. Most of our students are motivated by watching films and therefore enjoy completing work based around it.
What do you enjoy about running an Into Film Club?
It provides an opportunity for us to work together across the school, bringing everyone's strengths together in order to create inclusive and creative outcomes. I also enjoy setting up a 'cinema experience' in school, especially since we haven't been able to go to the cinema in recent years. We have a tuck shop where students can buy ice cream, popcorn, a drink and their tickets. We also have teachers and teaching assistants acting as ushers, showing students to their seats. It gives them that real life cinematic experience and prepares them for that experience in the future.
What positive changes have you seen in your pupils since joining the club?
Pupils are able to sit and concentrate for longer periods of time as they are interested in the topic and are always excited to find out what film we will be watching next. We usually select a film that will be the centre point for all our learning, with the film as a stimulus for an array of cross-curricular activities matching their interests. They have produced films and animations, made puppets based on characters, produced film posters, used coding apps to create robots, taken part in science experiments, developed their own games. This leads to an end of the term exhibition where students confidently and proudly showcase all of the work produced.
• Which films have gone down well at your club (including ones on Into Film+)?
• What parts of Into Film's wider programme do you engage in?
We use the Into Film resources and films available via Into Film+. The main resource we turn to time and time again is the Film in a Fortnight resource pack. This combines ideas from the ALN to K2 version to ensure we provide the best activities for our students.

Pam dechrau Clwb Into Film?
Mae'n myfyrwyr yn dysgu'n dda drwy wylio ffilm ac yn mwynhau'r profiad o wylio ffilm ar y cyd. Mae'r sain a'r gweledol mewn ffilm yn gallu helpu myfyrwyr i ddysgu am y broses o adrodd stori; yn gallu ehangu y dychymyg, datblygu eu dealltwriaeth o emoisynau ac empathi, ac yn gallu rhoi ffenest ar fyd gwahanol. Mae ein myfyrwyr yn cael eu hysgogi wrth wylio ffilm ac o ganlyniad yn mwynhau gwneud gwaith am y ffilm.
Beth ydych chi'n ei fwynhau am fod yn arweinydd ar Glwb Into Film?
Mae'n rhoi'r cyfle inni weithio gyda'n gilydd ar draws yr ysgol : mae'n dod â phawb at ei gilydd ac yn darparu ac yn cefongi gweithgaredd cynhwysol a chreadigol. Dwi hefyd yn mwynhau rhoi'r profiad sinematig, yn enwedig o gofio nad yw'r myfyrwyr wedi cael y cyfle i fynd i'r sinema mor aml dros y blynyddoedd diwetha'. Ry'n ni'n cynnal siop lle ma modd prynu hufen iâ, popcorn, diodydd a thocynnau. Mae'r Athrawon yn helpu wrth ddangos myfyrwyr i'w sedd mae'n rhoi profiad real iawn o'r bobl ifanc ac yn eu paratoi am brofiadau tebyg yn y dyfodol.
Pa newidiadau positif ry'ch chi wedi gweld yn eich myfyrwyr?
Mae myfyrwyr yn fwy parod i eistedd a chanolbwyntio am gyfnodau hir, yn enwedig os ydy'r pwnc o wir ddiddordeb iddyn nhw. Mae myfyrwyr wedi eu cyffroi ac yn edrych ymlaen at wylio'r ffilm nesa'. Ry'n ni ganamlaf yn dewis ffilm sy'n gallu bod yn ganolbwynt i'n gwaith dysgu gan ddefnyddio'r ffilm fel sbardun ar gyfer gwaith traws-gwricwlaidd. O ganlyniad, mae'r myfyrwyr wedi cynhrychu animeiddiadau, pypedau ar sail cymeriadau, posteri i hyrwyddo ffilm, gweithio ar apiau codio, cymryd rhan mewn arbrofion gwyddonol a datblygu eu gemau eu hunain. Ry'n ni wedyn yn cynnal dangosiad o holl waith y myfyrwyr ac yn rhoi'r cyfle iddyn nhw ddathlu a rhannu eu llwyddiannau ag eraill.
