Synopsis

Summer holidays have begun and Lale and her sisters are in high spirits. However, in their small conservative village in northern Turkey nothing passes unnoticed, and their excitement is condemned as improper. On the cusp of womanhood, their virginity is seen as a precious commodity to be guarded at all costs by their overbearing uncle and nervous grandmother. Hoping to be able to secure suitable matches as soon as possible and safely dispose of them through marriage, the girls are kept under lock and key to eliminate any possibility that their virtue be tainted. As their resistance to their imprisoned state increases, every small act of rebellion is countered by stricter measures to contain them.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
