Into Film Clubs
Find out everything you need to know about starting an Into Film Club.
A new competition has landed at Into Film… Inspired by Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic, First Man (in cinemas October 12), get your class or Into Film Club to enter our First Moments creative writing competition for the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Science Museum in Glasgow or London, courtesy of Universal Pictures.
Engage your students in this short literacy activity inspired by themes and events in the epic new blockbuster biopic, which sees Armstrong (played by Ryan Gosling) preparing to lead the first manned mission to the moon; the historic Apollo 11 flight.
Based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film spans the decade leading up to Armstrong's dangerous mission and is an incredibly personal account of the triumphs and the cost to his colleagues, his family, himself and even his nation as a whole.
In approximately 500 words, students should write a creative first-person account of Neil Armstrong's first moments when landing on the moon. They should think about and describe all elements of his experience, from the sights, sounds, and smells he might have encountered, to the way his experience of the lunar landscape might spark memories from back on Earth.
To get inspired, students can watch the trailer for First Man at the top of this page, and check out our Get Into Film interviews with director Damien Chazelle and Claire Foy and Olivia Hamilton, two of the stars of the film, below.
You can also hand out copies of our 3Cs and 3Ss question prompts to help them analyse the trailer (character, colour and camera / story, setting and sound) and then apply these prompts to enrich their piece of writing.
To enter, please submit 500 words from each student on A4 pieces of paper.
Please include on the back of each sheet:
