Synopsis

This sweetly uplifting film — the first ever by a female Saudi Arabian director — is about an independent-minded ten-year-old named Wadjda, who won't be pushed around by adults and their ridiculous rules. Wadjda is not to play with Abdullah, because he's a boy and not to ride a bike - she's told it'll stop her having babies...it seems all the things she wants to do, she can't. However Wadjda always finds solutions to her problems. She enters a scripture-reading competition, determined to win the cash prize and buy herself a magnificent green bicycle. Then she'll show Abdullah a thing or two about what girls can and can't do in the so-called man's world of Saudi Arabia.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
