Animation is one of the oldest forms of cinema. From the early days of film, animation has charmed audiences both young and old, and has continued to evolve and innovate along with changing technology. From The Adventures of Prince Achmed the oldest surviving animated feature film in the world, which uses shadow puppets to tell its story through to stop-motion pioneers Aardman and computer generated animators extraodinaire Pixar, animation is as diverse a medium out there. There has even been a return to traditional hand-drawn animation in recent years, notably from Irish studio Cartoon Saloon and their folk tale-inspired films - yet another demonstration of the lasting appeal of all forms of animation.
Over the next year, a celebration of British Animation called Anim18 will be taking place, led by Film Hub Wales, Chapter (Cardiff), the BFI Film Audience Network and project partners across the UK. Our own current Women in Animation spring screenings are a part of the Anim18 celebrations, and we've also created a brand new series of seven film lists, each focused on a specific form of animation, to help you delve deeper into the incredible world of animated films with your club members.
