Transition

Transition can be a difficult experience at any time, particularly for young people, whether it's starting a new school, moving home or something else. In these strange and uncertain times, and with the future so unclear for all of us, adjusting to new circumstances may be even more challenging. As children learn to adapt to classroom environments that are likely to be dramatically different to anything they had previously imagined, many other aspects of their lives are likely to be also affected, such as socialising with friends, mental health and dealing with grief.

Film's power as a tool for empathy is therefore more important than ever. Through it we see representation and kindness, showing characters facing hardships but also how they persevere through them, no matter what, whether through their own will or with the help of others. In this list, we explore a wealth of characters, situations and stories which demonstrate the anxiety around transition and associated issues but which also show our universal ability to adapt to new surroundings and come out the other side as stronger and happier people.

For more advice on using how film can be used to ease worries over transition, read our article: How to use film to support Transition
